Meat scandal
During the Progressive era, the meat industry was being criticized for its poor working conditions. Fingers were lost and then put into the meat, employees never washed their hands, and the equipment was bad and flimsy. People started protesting, and so Mr. Roosevelt, the president at the time, had to start cleaning up the meat packing industry.

Communism
Since workers in the U.S. were being treated horribly (bad pay, unsafe facilities, sexual abuse, etc.), Communism was taking control. Instead of the individual companies deciding what to do with their workers, the government did, creating a safer, more efficient society. Socialism also had a grip on workers, too. Everything seemed better than the horrifying reality of Capitalism.

The KKK
The Ku Klux Klan was a white supremacy organization that used violence to achieve their goals. They captured blacks by bribing authority, and then tried them with ridiculous crimes, which they would lose, and be punished for. Eventually, the klan died out after human rights activists began revealing what they really were doing.

Muck-rake
Another scandal was about muckrakers, people who exposed big business men and their unethical treatment of the working class citizens. President Teddy Roosevelt created this term when he mentioned "The man with the muck-rake" in his speech in 1906.
